March 2006 Mobile Monday

Hey folks, here’s the details for the March 6th, 2006 Silicon Valley edition of Mobile Monday:

  • What: March 2006 Mobile Monday (Mobile Web)
  • When: March 6th, 2006 7:00pm
  • Where: Haas School of Business (2220 Piedmont Avenue, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720-1900)
  • Who: Anyone interested in mobility
  • Cost: Nothing!

What do we have lined up:

  • Minimo - the Mozilla project to bring their open source browser to mobile platforms.
  • S60 OSS Browser - Nokia’s own open source browser entry.
  • NetFront 3.4 and other Mobile Web technology from ACCESS (PalmSource’s new parent company).

We’ve limited it to three presentations this time. The presentations have been running too long, not leaving enough time to talk with all the other folks who come to the events afterward.

Here’s a bunch of info about visiting Berkeley (Thanks Lilia!!), such as where to park and how to get there on BART. I’m hoping we see a lot of new faces, this being our first time over in Berkeley. So if you know anyone who might be interested but can’t normally make it, be sure to pass along the message!

  • For driving directions visit: http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/haas/maps.html#101
  • For a map of campus visit: http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/CD67.html
  • Public Parking Lots:
    1. Berkeley Way Lot: Berkeley Way between Shattuck Avenue and Oxford Street.
    2. Lower Hearst Garage (nearest to Haas): Hearst Avenue @ Scenic Avenue. Look for Pay stations.
    3. University Hall West Lot: Addison Street @ Oxford Street (2-3 Hours costs $5.00)
    4. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Student Union Garage: Bancroft @ Telegraph; non-reserved spaces only. Pay-at-exit to Ampco parking attendant. (2-3 hours costs $5.00)
    5. Non-restricted campus lots are available to the public for a fee during off peak hours. Check attached map for location; rates are posted at pay boxes.
  • Street Parking: Metered parking is available along Brancroft Way, Hearst Ave. and Piedmont Ave.
  • Riding Bart

Take the Richmond-bound BART train to the Downtown Berkeley station. From the BART station, it’s a 15-minute (uphill) walk to Haas; begin walking up Center Ave. towards campus and continue walking through campus until you reach Haas. For a map of campus visit: http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/CD67.html

You can also take the campus shuttle bus (closest stop is at Scandinavian Designs, at Shattuck and Addison). Ask to be dropped off at the Haas School of Business. Fare is 50 cents. Visit the campus shuttle website or call (510) 642-5149 for more information.

  • Taking AC Transit to Haas

Take the F Adeleine Transbay bus line at the Transbay terminal in San Francisco (1st and Mission streets). The bus will drop you off right in front of the Haas School of Business. For fares visit: http://www.actransit.org/riderinfo/busfares.wu.

As last time, anyone who wants to come and record the presentations for podcasting or videocasting is welcome to. But Russ and I don’t have the resources ourselves to do the recording (though we can probably help with hosting if someone else can do the production). See you all on Monday!!

  • MoMo Site Updates!

After a long, long time of promising to do something to incorporate the other Mobile Monday websites into the .com domain I grabbed oh so long ago, I finally took some time today to start the transition. I moved this blog to WordPress, renamed it Mobile Monday Silicon Valley (as we are now among many MoMo’s here in the U.S.) and put together a basic Index page for the MobileMonday.com website as well. You should go check it out - it has links to all the chapters around the world, latest headlines and links to random Flickr photos. I’ve also included those links into the bottom right of this blog as well.

This is actually just the first steps of the redesign process. Brian Fling has donated some time to do some real redesign of this blog and the main index page (not just the basic stuff I’ve slapped together), and after meeting up with the guys back in Finland at 3GSM, we’re going to try to centralize some other parts of the MobileMonday sites as well - including a central forum, aggregator, etc. The idea is very simple - if we can organize ourselves electronically, MoMo will be able to more easily gather global sponsors for the meetups, making it much easier to find space and provide munchies for everyone.

I’m also going to take some time and create some permanent pages for the sidebar which will help us as we organize the monthly meetings - including the history of the organization, an overview of how the meetups are run (we’ve pretty much got them down now), instructions for speakers (10-15 minutes, educational focused presentations), and clearer contact information for those interested in helping out, providing space, etc.

This stuff has been looon overdue, so I’m happy to have gotten some headway on it. The only really bad part is that if you got used to typing in .com into your browser or subscribed to the feed, you’ll have to swap it to the .us domain if the permanent redirect I threw in there doesn’t stick. Love to hear your thoughts on the updates!

  • Oof, almost didn’t get around to posting about last night’s Mobile Monday - it was a pretty great showing! 200+ people packed a warehouse out in Portrero hill, as we had five great speakers talk about their companies and location based services. Very cool. Thanks to everyone who came and made it another great event, and thanks again to AutoDesk and TeleAtlas for both speaking and picking up the tab for the evening, and thanks to Tik Games, Visage and Bones in Motion for speaking as well. Actually, Bones in Motion (MoMo alum Spencer Nassar spoke for them) just launched their long awaited LBS app today at Demo - but we were lucky enough to get a sneak preview last night! See what you missed if you weren’t there?

Anyways, as always, I’ve posted a bunch of pictures on Flickr, tagged with Mobile Monday. (I’ve got to get the hang of taking decent pictures with my W800i - even though it’s a 2 megapixel cameraphone, all the images seem grainy…).

For March 6th’s MoMo, we’ll be covering Mobile Web Browsers (the topic that got cancelled in January) so that should be cool - we’ll have info soon about the location. See you then!
